Progress....

At school our Primary art students are responsible for making the "thank you" cards for our volunteers for the Volunteer Reception at the end of March. Well, I've also had this idea to make note cards out of the students' artwork and then sell those. The above idea will be the thank you cards for the volunteers (mom, you get a sneak peak :) ) and then the note cards will only have the student art on the front (w/o the thanks in vellum). So, progress! I've also scanned about 20 pieces of artwork.

Above is a "peek-a-boo counting book" (just made that up) but it has a flap that the reader can open to find the item inside. So, this page had 10 dots, 10 stamped pencils and a photo of the students' 10 hands - cute? Hope it's not too obvious, but the watercolor background was just using up old sets we had that I just can't bring myself to pitch 'cause they still have some paint in them. We've made two books - one for the media center and one for "aftercare showcase" that is also at the end of the month.

And finally, I kept it very simple, but I created these small sample invitations (4 x 6),

and I created these bigger ones (5 x 7). I'm totally not happy w/ the ribbons I chose, but it was all I had on hand. I've emailed them to the "potential customer". We'll see and of course, I'll keep you posted. :o)

Okay, of to work on another book, this time a digital one of the students in aftercare also for the "showcase". Oh and still want to upload all that artwork I scanned to I can get the photos printed....

Thanks for checking in!

TGI S !

Thank God it's SATURDAY! I do love Saturdays :o)
-slept in a little
-caught up on my Heidi Swapp videos
-had my long hot shower
and now, munching on a yummy bagel w/ cream cheese and totally loving a hot cup of tea, "Earl Gray, hot" for those Capt. Picard, Star Trek fans like me out there......

For my regular readers, I know a Saturday post is a surprise, but I'm not sure I'll get to my usual Sunday evening post. Today, my plan is to lock myself up in my studio and totally ignore the chores today. (Not that I like cleaning house, but as is typical during school the house is a wreck - mounds of laundry, pile of dishes, vacuuming, dusting.....how does all this happen when we aren't even here?) And so, if I don't touch the house today, I'll be one busy camper tomorrow. I have so many projects to finish for work - good stuff - but like Donna Downey said, if I don't purge these from my brain (in my case, from my list of ideas, since I can't remember stuff) my family might find me curled up in some corner mumbling "artshow, print photos, 10 paintbrushes"......

My lesson for the week is I really have to say "Never say never" and own it!
As many of you know by now, I've been in touch with someone who might want me to make 75 invitations for her daughters birthday! Two weeks ago, I said "I will never do a custom order again", I find myself this weekend considering it. At dinner last night, I concluded I will try to say "no" because she needs it in the next two weeks; with my student artshow only 5 weeks away I just don't have the time......Scott concluded, I'm gonna do it anyway......the $225 I'd get for the job is too tempting. So is the potential to attract more jobs from the 75 mommies who will receive an invitation.

Well, I've prayed on it and know the answer will come. For today I will work away on the school stuff I brought home - a scanning student artwork project to make notecards with for fundraising and finishing the details on a counting book my arts and crafts students have put together - I'll keep you posted and maybe, just maybe with photos of completed projects.......okay, and maybe, just maybe a photo of the 1 idea I have to submit to this mommy for the birthday party.

Love to all,
Melle

I hit the TRI-FECTA!!!!!!

I did it! I met my 3rd scrapbook designer this weekend - Donna Downey!
Look, isn't she sweet. She hugged me like we had been long time friends. She was so fun and I left after my short 3 hours feeling so inspired. Thank you She Scrapbooks!

I loved meeting Tim Holtz because he too inspired me with his enthusiasm and creativity. Tim is all about "grunge" and the distressed look with inks, paints, sandpaper and so on. He likes to say "fun stuff" and I agree! I loved getting my fingers covered in ink. Tim also introduced us to some basic, rustic jewelry making and I loved that too!

I loved meeting Heidi Swapp because of her energy and because of her encouraging words. I love knowing that she's a mom and yet, with a supportive husband, she makes her busy, busy life work.

For those of you who have followed my blog since the beginning, I promise I'll try not to post the photo of Tim and I again (What is this now, the 3rd or 4th time? I just think he's such a cutie!) I would post my picture of me and Tomie dePaola except that was taken in the day of film cameras and I certainly don't know where that negative is. I do have the one photo posted in my classroom.

And although, Tim is still my favorite, I have to admit, Donna is now a close runner-up. I only got to take one of her classes, but in that class I got to play so much with acrylic and watercolor paint. I finally learned the basics for my watercolor crayons. I feel terrible all these years how I've not let my young students "scribble". It's so fun! With watercolor crayons you are just applying pigment to the paper....scribble away! Then you add water...and lots of it if you want. Here are my very, very first pages, but oh still so much to learn. Wait until you see some b & w photos on these.
And speaking of little b & w photos, check out this little tip: know how you can get collage prints from Walgreens? Well, I know it's shocking, but you can cut those up and taa-daa, you instantly have a variety of small little photos you can use on pages in mini-books! I know Polly may never read this blog, but I'd like to give her a shout out for that little tidbit. Thanks Polly! (yep, some of you know who I mean - genius!)

On my art teacher certification exam one of my multiple choice questions was something about "Why do artist share their work?" I can't remember what my choices were, but that question bothered me for months - how could that be a multiple choice question?! Why artist share their work, or if they even do, is such an individual and personal thing. Well, what ever the reason, I sure am glad the artists above share their knowledge, talent and enthusiasm with little ol' me and I in turn get to share it with 300 little ones every week - woohoo!!! :o)

And, just one more thought for the week, this weekend our pastor shared many ideas with us, but the one that has stuck in my memory (and that ain't easy to do anymore) was this:
"God said to love people and use things, not love things and use people."
If you are my friend or my family who are reading this entry tonight, please know that I love you and am so grateful you are part of my life.

Love you!!!!

Well, the following layouts may not be numerous, but they do represent a lot of learning. Of course, they are also a reminder of how much more I still have to learn! However, I successively created these in Photoshop 7.0. The first one was completed from an Ali Edward template and the second was another template, but I changed it a lot from the original idea.
(I believe you can click on any to enlarge if you want.)

It was so nice to have the extra day off today. I managed to get some important stuff done:
-groceries first thing this morning,
-the car serviced and washed (don't I just love Jiffy Lube),
-two meals cooked for the week,
-all grades entered and caught up,
-all laundry caught up,
and girls and I in bed by 8:20 so off I go, but sweet dreams everyone....

May you have a great week.
Love,
Melle

Happy Valentine's Day!

Top 10 things I love today:
1. I love that I have a hubby who has dinner waiting for me when I come home from a scrapbook retreat.
2. I love that I have two wonderful daughters who still stop what they are doing to greet me when I get home from my scrapbook retreat.
3. I love that I just got back from a scrapbook retreat!
4. I love spending time with friends; I love catching up with them and I love hearing their stories.
5. I love that I finally got a few things figured out about my version of Photoshop (thank you Anne and Kendra!).
6. I love that I finally finished making the cards that a friend at work "ordered".
7. I love that I am digitally scrapbooking again.
8. I love that Andrea made the tennis team last week.
9. I love that we have a new fridge and new stove.
And 10. Did I mentioned that I LOVE that my Valentine had dinner waiting for me when I got home from the retreat?! :o)

oh, just as a bonus: I LOVE that we have tomorrow off from school thanks to President's Day!

Thank you to all my friends for a very nice weekend! Thank you for following my blog and for teasing me so when I haven't updated. (I STILL think you should start your own!)
Thank you mom for giving up our Sunday lunch this weekend so I could go. :o)

Here's the centerpiece/flowerpot that I made for my friend at work and the thank you cards:

I have learned that it is way too stressful for me to do a job that I have been "commissioned" for. I much rather make stuff and sell it then make something upon request.....

Since I didn't make Valentine bags for sale this time, it was suggested I try perhaps Easter or even Teacher Appreciation Bags....any ideas, suggestions or "oh yes, I'll buy some"?

Love you all!

Here's why I won't be able to post tonight.....this little project took me longer than I expected today:

I fortunately have a friend at work who will pay me to make her daughter's birthday invitations. This is the 3rd year. I finished 20 in all. I still have thank you cards to go and possibly a center piece, but I had to get the invitations done today. Now I only have left to do is a PowerPoint Presentation for Tuesday's PTO night. I was supposed to have it ready to share with the other teacher I'm doing this with by tomorrow.....hmmm, oh and update my classroom blog.....well, I'm pretty sure that one won't happen either.

I did want to mention that we celebrated our 100th day of school this week - you know what that means, less than 80 days to summer vacation! Not that I don't love my job, I just LOVE summer more! :o)

Also, the Tooth Fairy will be coming tonight - what a surprise! Funny too, 'cause we just saw The Tooth Fairy movie last night.

Love to all!
Melle
